RARE Pra Rod Nain Bieow, Wat
Mahawan, Lamphun, Nua Din. A baked clay Pra Rod amulet copied the style of
ancient Pra Rod of Kingdom of Haripuñjaya, a Mon kingdom in what is now
Northern Thailand, existing from the 7th or 8th to 13th century CE, discovered
buried in many jars around the chedi/stupa of Wat Mahawan, Lamphun Province in
BE 2451 (CE 1908). Pra Rod Nain Bieow means Pra Rod amulet made by a novice
named Bieow. Nain Bieow collected the broken ancient Pra Rod amulets and
crushed them into earth dust, and then blended with clay to make his Batch of
Pra Rod amulets in BE 2463 (CE 1920). Nian Bieow was a senior novice at Wat
Mahawan, his right leg was injured in an accident while he was a young novice,
and had crippled him for life. According to the basic code of Buddhist monastic
discipline, Nain Bieow could not ordain as Buddhist monk, so he was a novice
for the rest of his life at Wat Mahawan.
